FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
USA Running Circuit Showdown at Quad-City Times Bix 7
Keflezighi, De Reuck Headline Field; $50,000 USA Championship Purse
DAVENPORT, IA - (July 18, 2002) - The USA Running Circuit - a USA Track & Field road running series featuring national championships from 5K to the marathon - returns to action this Saturday, July 20 at the Quad-City Times Bix 7 which hosts its first USA Championship. At the 28th annual Bix 7, deep U.S. fields are expected including 10 Olympians and 19 national champions and the top male and female contenders for the USARC Grand Prix.
For the men, the field is loaded with recent Olympians (Meb Keflezighi, Abdi Abdirahman, Rod DeHaven and Todd Williams), four 2002 national champions (Keflezighi, Tim Broe, David Morris and Peter DeLaCerda) and seven top USARC scorers (DeLaCerda, Abdirahman, Keflezighi, Broe, David Morris, Dan Browne and Williams).
Keflezighi, 27, from San Diego is the men's favorite, but he will have his hands full against this field and the challenging 7 mile course. Thus far in 2002, the Team USA California athlete has won three national titles (12K cross country, 15K roads and 10,000m track) and in May at Stanford, the UCLA graduate ran 27:20.15, the #2 all-time U.S. 10,000m performance behind his U.S. record.
In the USA Women's Championship, Colleen De Reuck who has won the Bix 7 three times (1997-98/2000) is the clear favorite and the current Women's USARC leader. The Boulder, Colo. resident and former South African has had an impressive year: bronze medal at the World Cross Country Championships, U.S. 12K record (38:53) at Lilac Bloomsday and second Bolder Boulder 10K. The Bix veteran likely will be tested by 2001 USARC Grand Prix champion Milena Glusac (Team USA California), 2002 USA 25K champion Jeanne Hennessy (Team USA California), Katie McGregor (Team USA Minnesota) and veterans Libbie Hickman (2000 Olympian) and Sylvia Mosqueda.
Total national championship prize purse goes ten deep and is worth approximately $50,000 (2002 Pontiac, $4000, $2500, $1500, $1000, $900, $800, $700, $600 and $500).
The Bix 7 marks the mid-point of the 2002 USARC season and thus, valuable Circuit points will also be at stake. Per USARC race, the first ten U.S. runners earn points (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1). The 2002 USARC offers over $340,000 in championship prize money plus a $25,000. grand prix purse ($6000, $4000 and $2500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall.
