Maybe I haven't read any threads closely enough, but I've seen little mention of the fact that Kim Smith ran 9:13, also under the old WR. Is she a contender for a medal in Beijing? That's a solid time for indoors in January.

1st of all, I got my ticket to the met!!
2nd of all, Kim Smith looked amazing and was actually closing on Defar the final 400-600 meters. She wasn't catching her, but was definitely closing hard. Medal contender? I say yes, based on what I saw last night.
Well that would make her 2nd fastest woman all time at 2 miles so I'd say it's pretty damned good!
Did they go through 3000 faster than the winner of the 3000? Also, great race for Fleshman.
She was closing in on her but not catching up?
To the OP,She finished second and was 3 seconds back. It is not like she took her to the line.

it was a sweet race. both looked really good. defar was smooth out there and kim smith was definitely hauling ass!

I was in the first row on the homestretch and Fleshman walked past quite a few times after her race. She looked ticked off, whether it was about her race or not I can't say.
from my perspective she has very little to haul.
If it was a "great race for Fleshman," why not mention that it was an even greater race for Deatherage?
9:13 2mi is worth about 8:39 3k.
I'd guess that it's probably worth even faster than that...more like 8:33-8:34.

8:35
8:31-32
McMillan says 8:35.
no

Extrapolating that conversion ratio (and the trend), I get a 5:00 mile is worth about a 9:48 2 mile.
Glad you're not my coach...
Well, was she a medal contender in Osaka? Was Flanagan? What happens indoors in January often has little bearing on what happens outdoors in August. Defar will be there in August, but she's been there many Augusts and Septembers before. Maybe Smith can be there come August, too, but this performance alone isn't proof enough that she will be.
Actually, since Smith came in fifth in Osaka and was certainly in the hunt with Goucher and Pavey for the Bronze, I'd say she was a medal contender in Osaka. Can this intelligently be denied?

She had as good a chance as Kara or Jo for that bronze in Osaka. She's running really well right now. She's definite bronze medal material.
I'd say not. Guess I wasn't aware of how well she did in Osaka. My bad.
