There were two very deep years, as I recall: 1983 and 1991. I might have copies of the results from 'AW' in my own archive, because I ran both of those years (I'll see what I can find this weekend).
In 1983 (when Mike Gratton won) you had to break 2.20 to get into the top 100 or so. I finished 63rd in 2.17.35.
1991 was year that they included the Marathon World Cup and the depth was incredible, because so many countries sent teams to the race. This is probably the year that you were thinking of.
