man there's no way dan coval is a junior.
He never liked running. He ran in hs primarily to get to a good school. Now he's just fullfilling his contract. Too bad because he has an incredible talent. I would guess he's running 35-45 mpw right now. If he were to push it up, there is no question he would be a major player.
Hes a bum, no self modivation, just another wasted talent in my eyes. If I were his coach, I would tell him to keep the scholarship and take a hike.
Dan Coval is a great kid, who's been through a lot. don't bag on people if you don't know their story. Yeah he has tremendous running potential, but maybe that's not where he's at with his life right now. not everyone thinks running is the be all and end all. for some it's just a means to an end.
Coval got a medical red shirt his freshman year. This is his fourth year, but only "counts" as third as far as eligibility status goes.
That's funny...one of his ex-teammates (from Council Rock hs) is a competitor of mine and he is known as one of the biggest underachievers in our conference!
ROCK BABY!! best not mess with the rock or mikey d is coming for ya! ROCK!!
most rock kids burn out in college. there is a long history of it. probably the amount of over-training they do, or did in the past. one athlete that i can think of, bob hammer, continued to run well in college (PSU) and that was years ago. any others? .... and by running well i mean running under 25:30 for 8k on a regular basis. i think hammer went something like 24:50 for 5.2 miles on his home course (could have been faster though)
Sean Mac-A-Hall (don't know how to spell it, but that is it phonetically), who ran for CR in the early 90s, was a very good college runner (not sure of time specifics, but I do believe he was under 25:00). Sean, though, transferred to Council Rock as a junior, so he missed two years of training and also missed the preseason his junior year.
Rob Hampson, who is only beginning his sophomore year at Lehigh, is poised to have an excellent college career. He has already run mid 25's on Lehigh's course at a freshmen and probably should be in the low 25's at Paul Short this week.
The problem with Rock's runners in the 80s and 90s was that the coach had them running 100 mile weeks at times. I do not believe they are quite so high-mileage any more.
It was my understanding that Coval rarely ran during the summer because he was usually away for the summer on big community service projects (like Habitat For Humanity), so I do not think burning out was as big an issue for him. I do know that he never liked to run and maybe he is just too sick of it to train hard anymore.
What is burnout?(be specific)
How can a healthy, young, strong, male burnout?
How can a person not recover from this mystery illness?
Dan Coval's training has been limited by chronic plantar fasia. It is only recent that he has been able to train on a regular basis. Dan has a limitless amount of athletic talent. If his fasia stays at bay, he can be one of the best from the Northeast.
yeah...and when they were doing it they won states every year. some problem.
It is untrue that Rock was unchallenged in the 90s by anyone in PA. The fact remains that many years, Rock was NOT the best team in PA, but that teams in the PCL were better. Since the PCL and PIAA have some long standing feud, PCL runners are never invited to districts and givena chance to qualify. Rock was wiped up by Archbishop Wood in the early 90s, then beaten on by Monseginor Bonner and Archbishop Ryan through the middle/latter part of the decade.
I agree that most kids probably do use running as a vehicle to get a good education. However, I do believe that for most kids (especially freshmen and sophomores) 100 miles per week is way too much if you want to continue to run competitively after HS, and the results (at least in Council Rock's case) speak for themselves.
I believe he completed in regionals last outdoor
Who competed in regionals last outdoor?
Wow, Bob Hammer, now there's a name I have not heard in a while. I remember (I think it was him?) watching Bob at states his last year in HS. That sucker broke 15 on one tough course in the AA race. He did it all alone too... The AAA race probably went around 15:20ish. He was a horse in college too... Did he do much running after PSU? What's he doing these days? Ah memories...

Coval. But he performed atrociously.
Hamer is an assistant under Coach Glavin at Saint Joe's. He trains with the team and is still tough as nails. He tempers it well with a good sense of humor and his general knowledge about the sport he excelled at. He should make a good head coach somewhere.
hamers an assistant coach at rider now
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
