I don't think people understand why Galloway is such an idiot. The fact is that a lot of respectable people advocated running as an exercise for the masses. These were people like Lydiard and Bowerman.
The difference between the gurus of the first running boom and the second is that the folks in the first one didn't make the equivocation that joggers and competitive runners were on the same plane of existence. They just aren't.
Galloway has the credit of being a guru of both booms as well as a competitive runner back in the day. Where he errs is encouraging people who are barely trained to run/walk/shuffle their way through a racing event when this is not necessary at all. Instead, he should tout the benfits of regular exercise except that he doesn't even do that. Today's Gallowalkers put out less effort than the joggers of the 70's and early 80's.
Galloway nakedly fleeces these idiots. It is a cash cow, and he cashed in. The reason he cautions so much against injury is because he realizes that injury may deconvert these fickle converts. They might take up something more pleasant like walking or going for a spinning class at the local Y. He has dumbed down running because that is the product he offers. It's like a car salesman selling what he has on the lot instead of selling people things they want or need.
When out-of-shape people tell me they want to get in shape, I tell them to get a decent pair of shoes and go for a walk. I tell them to do it 30 minutes a day every day. That's really all they need. The consistency of the routine matters more than anything else. And that advice doesn't cost anything. Just don't hog the inside lane at the track. Go find a walking path or stroll around the neighborhood.
Out.
