Along the lines of greatest record ever, what are some of the candidates for "Greatest Meet Ever"?
I wonder what is the most number of world records set in one day competition?
You could start by including Jesse Owens 4?or 5? world records set at a BIg 10 meet in Ann Arbor. There's a plaque on a small brick wall still there at the Michigan track I think commemmorating it.
Then of course there's the Mexico City Olympics with Beamon's long jump and Lee Evan's 400.
But I'm going to go with Bislett in 1985. Ingrid Christianson sets a world mark in the women's 10,000. Then in the men's 5000 Aouita sets up a record attempt. Only Sidney Maree is still with him and explodes in the lead with 400 to go. Despite any remarks I've made about Maree's kick he ran 55.2 for his last lap but Aouita responds with a 54.6 for the win and barely edging the record.
Then one of the all time great miles. Only Cram goes with the rabitt in a stellar field. But his third lap is just a 59. He then runs a 27 and powers a fnal 25.0 to run 3:46 WR. Jose Luis Gonnzales closes with a 3:47 followed by Coe and Scott both in 3:49. That was one of my most cherished video commentated by a hoarse Marty Liquori who can barely talk after yelling so much he's so excited. It pisses me off that I can't find that tape. Back when ABC used to cover the Dream Mile every year around July 4th. I'll take Liquori as a commentater over Rawson any day no matter how many mistakes he always makes. It's about enthusiasm not polish.
