Forgive me for reanimating a topic that has been broought up many times before, but the archive raised more questions about custom orthotics than it answered.
I've had a nasty double dose of PF going on four months now and I've tried everything (not running for six weeks, off-the-shelf insoles, stretching, Strassburg Sock, massage, ultrasound) short of getting custom orthotics.
I saw a podiatrist for the first time yesterday. Xrays indicated I have very high arches, a congenital condition that makes treating PF very difficult, he said. He is suggesting custom orthotics for $425.
I've read numerous PF threads here too, which lead me to ask whether Birkenstocks might help. The podiatrist said he wears a pair all the time but that no model exists to support arches as high as mine.
Some of the orthotics threads include posts from folks who ran with custom orthotics and then stopped, reasons often unstated. Did the foot pain stop? Were they uncomfortable to run on long-term? Does the same pair work in both daily work shoes and running shoes?
