Where are results posted. My Mom and GF should have just finished and Ild love to know if they got under 2 hrs.
Yup - very windy from half way onwards. Think I was in 6th place in 76mins... Would normally expect 72 - 73 but not used to running head on into sand storms.
I guess results will be on
if the site ever starts working.
What do you consider windy? what were the actual conditions?
The first 10km or so was a fairly strong tail wind. I'm not convinced of the accuracy of the mile markers, but if they're right I hit 6 miles in about 30:30 which would put me a minute inside 10km pb pace, but with relative ease.
From the turn-around point (where the marathon and HM runners part) the wind got stronger an stronger. My pace immediately went from the low 5's to around 6:30's. Had to run with almost closed eyes due to the sand and was constantly being attacked by rogue gatorade boxes which had escaped from the drinks stations.
Couldn't comment on the wind speed, but if you're running into it @ 10mph it's going to feel even stronger than it probably was. Even so, I'd suggest it was touching gale force. In the post race interview I think the winner described it as 'impossible' conditions. Maybe an exaggeration but it's the toughest race I've ever ran.
Temperature wise it was cold whilst waiting around, but idea once running.
Just received an e-mail from the organisers which suggests their website will be down for the foreseeable.
I believe the winds were around 15 mph and most people running the half were in no man's land as far as having anyone to run with the 2nd half....at least I was.

2003 Las Vegas Half Marathon and Marathon. Sustained winds of 25 mph with gusts around 40 mph that blew over outhouses. Oh yeah, point to point courses that were actually run in from the desert with sand from all over hitting you in the face and the rest of your body.
Taken from an article back in 2003:
David Bronfenbrenner tuned up for a planned run across the United States by winning the Las Vegas international Marathon under miserable conditions Sunday.
Bronfenbrenner, of West Hazelton, Pa., and the record field of 7,901 in the half-marathon and marathon battled a prevailing headwind with gusts up to 45 mph on the course from Jean, up the old Los Angeles Highway, to the finish line at Sunset Park.
...
"Through the first 10 (miles), it wasn't too bad," Bronfenbrenner said. "Once we hit the halfway point, it felt like 50-mph winds. ... The wind was blowing really, really bad."
The last two years of this two year old race, the winds have been unbearable. Time for a new weekend.
The last 5 years it has been windy on race day.
It had been sunny and no wind in Vegas for weeks
but when marathon day comes,
the winds blow.
The race must be cursed.
It doesn't matter what day is picked.
I just checked the obs for Las Vegas today. The winds were ~12mph gusting to 20 mph from the S and shifted to SSW.
joseph kaohuga of kenya won in 21643, jimima jelegat won the womens race in 23525
Today's half marathon was certainly a unique experience. I was aiming for 70-71 and came home in just under 80, and working hard for it. The first six miles, if the marker was correct (which I don't think any of them were), in 31:45. I turned the corner and into the headwind and the struggle began. I think I even managed to get a 8 minute mile in there somewhere. Things only got better when two guys caught me and we took turns leading for a minute at a time and letting the other two get a bit of a break.
I'm glad that I got a chance to run this race, but I certainly won't be coming back to attempt a decent time again. That's the hardest I've ever worked for 79min half.
On a side note, it was a very poor decision on the event organizers part to have the half and the full start at the same time. It didn't affect me at all, just the poor guy who was pacing off of me for the first four miles. He eventually asked me what I was hoping to run the marathon in and was less than impressed to find that I was in the half...
Still, it was pretty cool running the strip...

The full was really hard work --the entire leg up Smoke Ranch was into the wind from the west (mile 10 to 14), the Torrey Pines leg was gusty wind (miles 14 to 20) from the southwest, and mile 23 to the finish was into the wind from the southwest. Last year was colder, but the wind was not as much of a factor after the first six.
Ive heard the same wind story from my mom and girlfriend who ran the half together. They went out in 8:50 pace and came back in between 9:25 and 9:30 pace (probably meaningless if mile markers were off). And neither of them said that they hit the wall or died and they said they felt they ran perfect pacing. I think that describes the wind. My mom did say that she thought the mile markers were all off, but mostly on the way back. Did any of you guys in the half see the 12 mile mark?
The Las Vegas Marathon/Half-Marathon was a completely disorganized operation. The start was horrible!!! And I'm talking about the Elite start. First of all, all the people in the elite paddock weren't elite. During the course of the run... the bands weren't even set up yet. Down the finishing straight, there were people on the course cutting across the course. The turn before you got to the final 200 or so was confusing. There was no pre-race food (which I would have thought would be important for a marathon?!?) No pre-race gatorade or like drink. Only 2-3 stations that had gatorade or like drink (or if there were more... I got the wrong cups at the stations). At the finish all they had was water, bananas and frozen chiquita smoothies... very appropriate since it was like 50 with a 15-20mph wind
The mile markers were WAAAAYYYYYY off. I talked to Spiker after the race and he said that some of his splits were 5:20ish, 4:40ish, and 4:00. Those were 3 splits that he had consecutively. These mile markers were not only inaccurate... some of them were missing altogether!!!
Also, logistically... they offer 65,000 in this sort of game they set up. They started the elite field of "professional" women 17:52 before the professional men started. Which ever one finished first got the 65 Large. This field of women I'm refering to was 2 deep. And the Men's field was like 4 deep. To offer 65,000 you'd think they'd assemble a deeper field... they could attract a lot of good runners for that... but they'd need to keep joe-jogger out the the elite paddock.
Also, at the packet pickup/expo they ran out of virtually all the t-shirt sizes except x-large. If they're gonna run out of the sizes... why do they have us put a t-shirt size on the registration form??? And this doesn't really apply to me, but think about it... they charge was like $75-95!!! And you don't even get the t-shirt that fits you?!?!
They did have PLENTY of port-o-potties for their anticipated field of 25,000. Which only 12,000 showed up for. If they were as prepared in all other aspects of the event this would have been the world-class event the announcer kept saying it was. Extraordinarily disappointing. I mean, imagine if you were running your first road race ever... this would definitely sour you to the sport.

The times seem much slower than last year. I would have placed 20th with my time from teh first LV marathon. Just how bad was the wind? I know last year was pretty windy for the first half. I remember it clearing up after that. Also, I dont know about the race organization this year, but I was really impressed with it last year.
mapped with a garmin 13.49 started in the second corral, also mapped it by hand, on top of incorrect mile markers, and the list could go on and on, for 90.00 dollars a waste of money
