Easy answer is that Hiltz ran smarter, because she ran a faster time. But she never felt like she had as much a chance of a medal as St. Pierre did. Would be interesting to compare to Bell's race.

They were terrible.

I agree, but what do you think of St. Pierre?
St Pierre ran to medal, love the grit. Unfortunately she was 125 meters short of hanging with the big dawgs. Wish her the best in her future career whatever that may be. Proud of her!
About the same I’d say. That opening lap came back to hurt them pretty bad in my opinion
I think they did about what we would expect them to do.
(Do I mean Hiltz or both of them? Ah, English is hard).
I say this as a really big Elle fan, but that was dumbest race tactic I’ve ever seen.
Who goes hard to the rail first 200m then faster next 200m. Goes through 400m 59. It was over for ESP right there. It's like she didn't know it was a 1500m race.

If St Pierre want to medal, she shoulda went out with Bell.
The grit she ran with was basically like she was running for Gold.
I thought Hiltz ran the better race, being more patient. They both fell apart, but Nikki didn't fall apart as much as St. Pierre. Oh well.

ESP went for the win! good for her.
neither she or hiltz were smart to stay in contact with the 59, but at least ESP committed as long as possible. hiltz ran a better time because she bailed on any chance of a medal.
Neither. Either play to win or go home. They do just enough to qualify.
Do we think ESP will continue to run after this loss or does she move on?

I don't think Elle bothered to evaluate what Gudaf Tsegay was doing in this race, nor Tsegay's overall level. There should have been a personal coach and American coaches in general who were emphasizing beforehand that there was strong likelihood -- if not near certainty -- that Tsegay would try to set a speed trap for Faith Kipyegon.
If you see that developing, ignore it. Kipyegon ignored it, by her standards. She always rushes up just behind the leader in the early going of the global final. This time she was already forewarned by Tsegay's tactics in the 5000 and no doubt she had Kenyan coaches advising her to lay back. It wasn't even that far back, but I wasn't worried given her level.
Welteji might have been a bit overconfident and forward placed. She would have known the tactics beforehand

Don't think she'll go out to the pasture just yet.
I don't think either were gonna podium, but Hiltz clipped someone or stumbled with about 400 left, lost their stride and by the time they recovered it was too late. maybe, maaayyybe if Nikki doesn't stumble they have a shot at bronze.
