Surprise Italian Olympic medal from an athlete that never has performed at that level before, and never will again? No, I probably could've guessed that would happen.
Except that she ran 14:31, and she's run in the 14:40s a zillion times, including in the last Olympics, and twice last year, including in the Heats at WCs, and won the Euro championships by running 14:35 this year. It's not like she's never run under 15 and she's suddenly running 14:12.

Keep showing (not necessarily you, just there is always a poster) your ignorance by periodically claiming Battocletti has "never performed" when she's been on a consistent ascending trajectory for years and went sub 15 at least 3-4 years ago.
You just don't follow track, you probably follow american track. Maybe you know everything about Wisconsin ninth graders that have run sub 4:20 for a mile on a Tuesday. But then you watch an olympic final and you can say meaningful things about 3 athletes at best. Shame. Cope hard.
In a slower race, athletes with slower PBs can medal. If the medal required a time between 14:00 and 14:23, she wouldn't have won bronze. It's really not rocket science.

She preceded many athletes who had much better personal bests, but who ran much slower than her. It can't be her fault if the others ran slower. She ran her race, the others lost.
Battocletti improved her personal best slightly this evening. A few months ago she won the European championships in the 5000m and 10000m. She's not unknown.

Okay, then let's do a quick comparison to American track. Alicia Monson would've had a HUGE performance if she was healthy and medaled in Paris. Would've been by far her best race ever, and arguably slightly suspicious.
She has raced Battocletti three times and is 3-0 against her. She has twice run faster than Battocletti's 5000 PB, six times run faster than her 3000 PB, and twice run faster than her 10000 PB. She ran one road 5k and ran 7 seconds faster than Battocletti's PB.
Her 3k PB is 16 seconds faster, her 5k 12 seconds, and her 10k 48 seconds faster. She is by every objective measure the far superior athlete. And it would've taken a MONSTROUS race for her to medal tonight. Acting like it was anywhere close to expected for Battocletti is insanely disingenuous.
