I took Friday off.. MANDATORY because I capped the MAX vacation hours. Took Friday off. Might as well be a holiday Saturday out here. Grocery stores, Parks, highway all absolutely full. Unbelievable and also disappointing.

Let's be real. Most jobs do not need to exist.
Corporate work culture is a joke at this point. It has been for a while, but COVID really made the chickens come home to roost.
I think most people have deeply internalized that their jobs are not needed and companies do not care whether you go or stay and that COVID exposed the modern "information" economy for the absolute joke that it is.
Somr people have woken up and realized being a matrix work slave for 40-60 hours every week but still being broke is pure stupidity. Some people that save money are working too much when they're young and not enjoying life until retirement, but tomorrow is never a given and you can't take the money to your grave. Slaving away and hoarding money then dying means you worked for nothing. Enjoy life while you still can.

Whoa… you better not let Flagpole see your post. He’ll take those as fighting words.
Wait, did you start your post complaining about being forced to take vacation? Work is important but there's a lot more to life than that, that's what your vacation time is for. Need to take some moments to enjoy life too

If this is true there are billions of shareholder value waiting for companies should they lay people off. We've seen it to a much smaller degree in tech – do you think there is a lot more to come?

Nah...those aren't fighting words...they are stupid words. I don't fight children.
You can save enough money to retire early and wealthy and also have fun along the way. You also don't need to work more than 40 hours a week either. If I had decided to slave away and not spend any money on fun, I could have retired as early as age 35. Some people do that. Instead, I retired in my mid-50s while taking at least two vacations every year (sometimes more) and having all kinds of other fun.
People who say that those who save and invest for the future are putting off fun until a day that might not come, are those who don't have the discipline to invest for their future. For most people in America, retirement day DOES come. I know a few people in their 60s who say they will have to work until they die. What a b!tch that is....and for what? Starbucks every day? Cars they shouldn't have bought? Clothes, homes that are too big and expensive, eating out way too much? Wasting money on gambling and alcohol? Not keeping money in the stock market because they think they can time it to maximize profits? Fools.
