Need advice on starting up running again.

38 years old is nothing you but right now you are a fatass. Get rid of 15-20 pounds from diet alone ( starvation type diet) to prove you have the discipline. Then start running and biking gently. Take it from there. Within 8-10 months you will be leaner able to get rock hard again

So should I run at all at the moment??

30-60 minutes of moderate to vigorous walking each day would be a good start. You could do a few of those days on elliptical/arc trainer each week if you can. Maybe bike and/or swim some if you enjoy those things. You can probably add in a little running before long, but I’d be careful about jumping in quickly with much. A long layoff and the weight gain can be tough on the joints and connective tissue as you start back up, I think.

Run slow, yes. Run/walk if you have to. I’d go with running every other day and walking on the “off days”.

Cut out excessive sugar and alcohol as much as possible. Have fun with the process

I’ve never been 235, but I’ve taken long breaks and gained weight. Once you get past the first 2 weeks, it’s actually quite nice to see improvement and changes in physical appearance.

Old chump, you need to lose some weight first. Start improve your diet and do some run/walks without injuring yourself.
Forget the 70 min 10 milers and just be happy that you start moving again.

Try the stationary bike or swim if you have issues running. When you start out running, more than 10 or 15 minutes may be a challenge. Take it slow to begin with.

Well start off slow and build up for the first 2-4 weeks before getting into doing any proper sessions. Focus on developing your long run each week till it gets to at least 40-45 mins then start adding in some faster stuff.

do not turn into a mileage queen. the idea is to steadily build back up your fitness from zero without an accident or a repeated stress injury. at this point you toss out whatever you used to do. you are a noob. work on your fitness like it and put purposeful limits on how much you do/increase. the idea is to lose weight and get better with time, but stick with it, rather than try and prepare for the olympics and get hurt in a week.

Good advice here. You're probably excited to get active and healthy again, which is great. But focus that excitement, at least for now, on nailing a solid diet and some activity everyday. And that can absolutely include SOME running right way. But put off the idea of becoming a "runner" again for a few months until your body is ready to handle it. Think about eating and fitness habits that are sustainable for not just the next few months to achieve an arbitrary goal either, such as weekly mileage or a time based race goal. Rather, habits that you can adhere to so you never see 235 on the scale ever again.

That still gives you a BMI of 31, which is classified as obese. BMI isn't everything, of course, but you need to face the cold, hard truth: "massively fat" isn't incorrect. You're 38, which isn't old, but the pounds won't just melt away like they would in your 20s, and you're going to have to keep a close watch on what you're eating and drinking. You absolutely can get back to running, but it's going to be a slower process with more injury risk than it was 5-10 years ago. The first 6-12 months will feel stupid, but you can eventually get back to consistent running and start seeing regular improvement again.

Don't put it off. The longer you wait, the harder it gets. And the health penalties for obesity and a sedentary lifestyle just keep rising exponentially the older you get.

BMI is racist

Well, I just finished my first run in a while. I had a goal of 30 mins and made it to 25. My pace was VERY slow; like 7:30/km pace. HR was around 154 bpm average.

For those of you suggesting I’m fat: you’re right lol. At least I have my starting point here, anyway. Getting back into the fitness I was in seems nearly impossible, but I’ve managed to cut weight and come back into shape before. God Willing I can do it again.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do tomorrow? Perhaps the same thing??

Great job today. Don't try to repeat tomorrow. Very easy to get derailed with injury. Do either a long walk or elliptical to add activity without impact.
