My HS athlete is running about 50mpw right now... getting up to 60-65 in a couple weeks. Most of his runs are in the 7:45-8:30 pace range. He's pretty good. 2:08/4:35/9:45 this past spring. Very hot and humid where we live so I don't think this is terrible or anything... but I'm certain he's plodding.
Should I try and push him and tell him he needs to keep between 7:15 and 7:45 pace or something? I feel like its one thing to run that slow if he's running 100mpw... but he's not. No reason a 17yo that fit an looking to crush cross country should be running that slow day in and day out, right? I also don't want to get him injured or burnt. So not really sure what to do. Maybe tell him to run by HR? Right now his easy days are at about 155bpm.
