I am fairly new to coaching. I have my athletes do uphill threshold runs as part of early and mid-season marathon prep. I tell them to run these at the same perceived effort of thresholds on the track/road, which they have to do at their assumed individual threshold pace (as calculated using Daniel’s VDOT tables). However, they struggle to hit a sustainable pace uphill and usually overdo it.
What is the best way to hit threshold pace uphill? Canova prescribes to do them at „90% effort“, which I find is an even more difficult advice for athletes to follow.
Would heart rate zones be the only option? We don’t use HR monitoring for training purposes at the moment, my whole program is pace-based. Lactate meters are not an option. Thanks!
