Will Sajati restore Algerian athletics' glory at the 2024 Paris Olympics?
July 13, 2024
Algerian runner, Jamal Sajati (24 years old), continued his brilliance in the 800-meter race, after achieving a national record and the best world result, within the activities of the ninth round of the Diamond League athletics meetings in Monaco, France, on Friday.
Sajati achieved the best time in the 800-meter race this year, recording one minute, 42 seconds and 46 hundredths of a second. This is considered the best time in the distance this year, and the personal and Algerian record, ahead of the Spaniard Mohamed El Attawi (1.42:04 minutes) and the Frenchman Gabriel Toal (1.42:10 minutes).
Last Sunday, the Algerian runner achieved a new national record with a time of one minute, 41 seconds and 56 hundredths of a second, after the previous national record for the 800m (men) was held by Tawfik Makhloufi with one minute, 42 seconds and 61 hundredths of a second, which he achieved in the summer of 2016, during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), where he won the silver medal.
Runner Jamal Sajati had previously recorded the best global result for the year 2024 in the 1000-meter race, when he covered the distance in a time of 2 minutes, 13 seconds and 97 seconds, during the international meeting held in South Africa, according to what Algerian Radio reported from the Algerian Athletics Federation.
"His qualifications will restore the glories of the past."
Regarding the future of Jamal Sajati, the former Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Allalou, told “Maghreb Voices” that this rising runner “can recreate the glories of the past and record them in the record of individual sports, specifically the 800-meter race.”
The former minister, Alalou, continues his talk about the runner, Sajati, noting that “his athletic abilities and world-class level qualify him to ascend the podium in his specialty race after the series of victories and records he achieved recently in Monaco and elsewhere.”
Mohamed Alalou confirms that the results achieved by the runner Sajati are an indication of future successes, describing them as “a resounding success”, adding, “It is customary for us to record titles and awards in the half-long distances in athletics, and this is from the runner Maskina Batmin, Said Qarni, Benida Merah, Boulmerka, Noureddine Morceli, and Tawfik Makhloufi.”
These aforementioned names are considered among the most prominent Algerian runners who have ascended the podium in international forums, the latest of whom is Tawfik Makhloufi, who won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the 1500-meter event, a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and other medals.
Jamal Sajati (25 years old) is an Algerian runner, specializing in half-long distances. He won the gold medal for the 800-meter race (men) at the Mediterranean Games hosted by Algeria in the summer of 2022. In the same year, he won the silver medal for the same race at the World Athletics Championships in the American city of Oregon.
Olympic champion project..
According to the Algerian sports journalist, Ahmed Hijab, runner Jamal Sajati is “expected to be on the podium at the Paris Olympics to restore the glory and memories of his Algerian runner predecessors, given his age and what he has been doing recently, and his distinction in strictness, discipline, and keenness to increase the volume of training with his technical staff.”
Speaking to “Maghreb Voices,” Hijab said, “The Algerian champion, Jamal Sajati, has become the first runner since the inception of the Diamond League to be able to break 5 full records in one race.”
The speaker lists the series of titles and records that Sajati has recently won, indicating that this young runner "will be a potential Algerian Olympic champion who will rewrite the glories."
