When the Italians colonized the future Eritrea, they brought with them a love for the sport of cycling. When the Italians left, the love cycling remained. Even before Bini, you’d get huge groups gathering in bars and movie theaters there to watch Tour de France coverage since owning their own tv is out of reach for most Eritreans, so it’s a huge social thing there to watch cycling.
The UCI has a developmental program for promising cyclists from countries that aren’t traditional cycling powers who have raw talent but need to work on things like bike handling skills before they get picked up by a major professional team. Girmay is the biggest success of that developmental team so far.
