What do you all think of this article? At first I thought it was crazy but then did think, "Maybe it would be nice if we had some standards in the US and weren's obsessed with appearance."
How is the country disciplining an athlete for their appearance not “obsessed with appearance”?
The US does not discipline athletes for their appearance. We have freedom in this country.
I didn't see anything in that article that said she was being disciplined for her appearance. It said that people on Chinese social media were criticizing her appearance. How is that different than what happens in American social media when athletes race in dramatic clothing, jewelry, makeup? Plenty of appearance shaming here too.

Attributing random negative comments about an athlete on Weibo to "China" is like attributing random negative comments on Twitter or Letsrun about an an athlete to "America."
Clickbaity media can always find comments on social media that may or may not be representative or even be sincere opinions by a real person, and then attribute the comments to a whole group, country or "the Internet." As in "the Internet" hates xyz. Or on Letsrun, where random stupid comments by some anonymous person get attributed to "Letsrun" as a whole.

The population of North, Central, South and Caribbean combined is ONE Billion. China is 1.4 Billion.
Adding ALL of Western Europe ONE billion grows to 1.33B ... still short.
Add Australia AND New Zealand to the above ONE billion grows to 1.4B ... dang, almost ran out of the "good" countries.

And yet what would happen to you if you spoke freely about a negative opinion of someone else? You'd get accused of "**** shaming" or "****phobia." Is that freedom? At least they have freedom to criticize.

Case in point. People on Chinese social media speaking freely about their opinion = appearance shaming. Which better represents freedom?

America’s current moral, social and aesthetic standards are roughly equivalent to the traveling “carnies” of 60-70 years ago.
China hasn’t yet experienced multigenerational excess like we have, so they still have some standards of decency. Give them another generation or two and they’ll regress to our shameful level.
