Did anyone see the Q&A with Kerr in Athletics Weekly? The part where he talked about Grand Slam track really got me upset and epitomizes why I think it won't work and won't be good for the sport.
Ok here are the two questions when he talks about Grand Slam Track.
Why did you decide to join the Grand Slam Track league?
I’ve always been very open to progression in our sport and I think there is another way that the running world is moving towards. They approached me to lead their 800m/1500m category and I saw their vision and they understand who I am as an athlete.
I think it suits me super well and it’ll allow me to race where I want to race and race the people I want to race. I’m looking to race the best people in the world as often as I can and that is sometimes difficult on the circuit because you don’t know where everyone’s going to be. I’m excited to see who else is signing up for it and who I am going to be racing over the next couple years.
What? What he says makes no sense and isn't true.
I would have respected him more if he'd been honest and just said, "They paid me a shit ton."
Instead he said it will "allow me to race where I want to race". False: He will run the 4 meets in the cities they tell you to race in and on the dates they tell him to race on.
Then he says it will allow him to "race the people I want to race" but in the next sentence he admits he has no idea who he will be racing and he wants to see who is in it.
So the whole rationale is clearly just made up.
But it gets worse - much worse. There is a second question and I've bolded the money quote.
How will this new league change the sport?
I think the whole sport will change from these meets. I don’t race a ton right now because that’s the blueprint that’s been working but after the Olympics I want some change.
I think this was the right change for me to race more and enjoy being fit. I want to enjoy being one of the best in the world and not worrying too much about going after an Olympic title or a world title. Once I do what I want at the Olympics, it is time for a change. I want to come home more, I want to race more in the UK because that’s what the UK crowd deserves.
This quote and Sydney's quote a few weeks ago perfectly show my main problem with the whole league - its whole premise is built on a lie. MJ and organizers want you to think these are going to Grand Slams and really important. But Sydney already said it will be great for people to see her not in shape and work her way into shape which implies the meets aren't really important and Kerr basically admits that as well - saying he won't be too worried about how he does. He'll just enjoy himself out there and not be stressed like he is for a real championship at Worlds.
My prediction. It dilutes the diamond league, dilutes worlds and then goes bankrupt in a year or 2.
