I have a pretty decent HS athlete that struggles on tempos. He’s a 9:50/4:35 guy this spring who wants to make a big jump next year. Had him do a 3m tempo today and told him to just go by feel, not to push it but go up tempo. Ran 6:50/7:05/7:10. HR was about 160. This is about the same pace as last year when he was running an 10:40 3200. Heat and humidity was pretty bad (we live in NY and it was 80s with massive humidity). Most of his runs are like 7:50-8:20 pace. He won’t hesitate to jog at 9:00 pace even. Dude doesn’t like to push at all if he’s not doing intervals.
Do you guys think just stick with it since it’s so early in the season? Should I get some faster kids to push him? Maybe break up the temp into 3 or 4 x mile at 6:00 pace with a min rest and see how that goes?
Thanks for any advice.
