ok since you brought it up:
Gerry Lindgren style training (while high mileage in nature) has other interesting qualities
1) he just ran - didn't even count miles and probably didn't even realized how much of a high mileage runner he was until other ask him how much he ran.
2) he ran multiple times per day - even a low mileage runner can do this.
3) he didn't have a real training plan - spontaneity was his guide (again anyone can do this) It has a lot to do with just running how you feel vs. running by a strictly dictated schedule.
I have run successful off both high and low mileage training - and interestingly here is what worked.
* not having a plan but instead listening to my body and running how I felt. This could mean not running one day and doing way more than I imagined the next. I don't decide what the workout is - it just happens.
* my lowest mileage with success was in the 25-40 mile range (mostly high quality on 4 runs per week)
*my highest mileage with success was 20 weeks at 140 per week (10 of that at 160)
* neither resulted in an injury
* both lead to best times of that training time frame
