Not controversial at all. Myers has had a good season (especially considering his age obviously), but simply not good enough to make the team. You have to do better than 6th place at random Irena Szewinska Memorial behind four B-level Europeans to make the Australian team nowadays
So stewie dfl at diamond league being spat out the back and Spencer dfl at his last meet being spat out the back in 3:38 more deserving righto. neither of these 2 have shown more form than Cam. really bad decision. smacks of bideau bias!
Got to be kidding. the heats of Olympics will be a doodle and then a kick and Stewie has none. he was woeful at worlds last year. Best days are behind him.

Hi Thoughtsleader. I can understand Spencer being chosen above him, but McSweyn is clearly done at 1500m. Giving Cameron Myers a place in the team would give him invaluable experience for the next Olympic Games, when he will be 22 and which will likely be the best chance Australia have had of winning gold since Herb Elliott.
You also have to think about the marketing of this sport, which is still in intensive care. Myers is a potential superstar. Sending him to the Olympics would raise his profile, the profile of Australian athletics, and the sport in general.
I'll be surprised if McSweyn makes the final, and if he does, we all know that he'll just act as Jakob's pacemaker and hand him the gold ahead of Kerr. Hmmm...maybe that is the Ozzie thinking.

Stewy had an off day in Oslo and then proceeded to run 3:35 in Heusden in horrible weather conditions, so he's fine. Also ran an PB of 12:56 this year, so definitely not out of shape. Spencer indeed had a disapppinting showing in Turku, but won the Australian champs and still showed better shape at NCAA's, so I would just hope for a case of jetlag or similar
Spenno’s best race this season is a 3:37 at nats. 3:38 at ncaa’s is hardly awe inspiring considering the kick wasn’t great.
stewie 12:56 in the 5km -passed by a lot of bodies in the last 400m. He’s had a lot of off days in the 1500. last year at worlds he was woeful. his best days are behind him in the 1500.
He’s clearly in better form than Stewie! But is in the wrong stable just like Lisa.
For any budding athletes in Australia: if you want any hope of being selected to represent your country at the big events, you have to join MTC. Note: once part of MTC, actually performing at these events is entirely optional.
They went with fastest three, so it's not a howler. But you'd love for AA to show some vision and give Cam the development opportunity. We all know by now Stewy can't progress that far in the 1500m as he can't kick, and his top end is seconds off the others. Would have rathered him try the 5000m and give Cam the 1500, Stewy would at least probably make the 5000m final.
Surprised Stewy is even fit. Seems like Robbo and Rayner are cooked.
We've seen what Stewy can produce at big champs in the 1500m and i think it's pretty clear 1500 is not his best event anymore. Cam however is a wildcard who could cause some massive upsets. Silly not to select Cam in the 1500 and Stewy only in the 5000

I understand your thinking, but I don’t think selectors should use ‘blood him with experience’ as a reason to pick an athlete.
I think that makes sense for team sports. But for track, there has to be a more ruthless, arbitrary decision made on what you have achieved to date. To that end, you have give the benefit to McSweyn’s experience to date versus Mayer’s potential.
I fully get both sides of the argument. I *just about* think this is the correct decision.
Mcsweyn has two 3.31 results in the qualifying period which is more than can be said for anyone else either in the team or who was vying for a spot. He finished 7th in the last olympics (which should be considered 6th due the banned scum bag katir finishing in front of him). And he was a finalist the following year in the world champs when the likes of Hoare got eliminated in the preliminaries. It was only in last year's world champs where he underperformed. He absolutely deserves his spot.
