Being that he closed his Olympic 10K silver medal in 52, uh, yes, Galen could have broken 50 in the 400. Not sure he can now though.
He mentioned that this was in a workout 2 weeks prior to Rio so he was sharp. The workout was Ks (6?) in the 230s followed by quarters. He said there was plenty of rest but he ran back to back 49s.

I've never heard Galen speak before. It certainly seems like he is one of those people who really does one thing and one thing only.
No one every says crap about Galen, the person. He was always awkward and shy but a nice enough guy. It's just that Galen, the runner, was too heavily influenced by Alberto Salazar, a barfbag of a person.
I can maybe seem him splitting a high 49 on a relay but that's it
