This is the dumbest system where a runner whose PR for 10k is 90 seconds slower will be going to the Olympics over Valby. Also…why didn’t she get any points for the NCAA title?
Valby: 1221 from April + 1155 performance score from tonight + 50 placing score from tonight = 2426 / 2 = 1213p
Schweizer: 1218 from the Ten + 1155 performance score from tonight + 45 placing score from tonight = 2418 / 2 = 1209p
After taking out Monson, Izzo, Henes O'Keeffe, and Rogers, Klara Lukan from Slovenia will be #26, Valby will be #27, and Schweizer will be #28. Rahel Daniel from Eritrea is in on cross country ranking and hasn't raced in over a year so almost certain to drop, opening the final spot for Schweizer.
Important to note that cross country rankings places do not fill in with the next XC ranking spots after an athlete drops, it is take it or leave it for the 8 athletes in the quota when the window closes. Any XC rankings drops will be filled in by 10K rankings.
If they don't go full hypocrit on themselves and stick to their terrible recent policy, the UK should scratch a minimum of two runners (McColgan is hurt, Keith, WarnerJudd, Donnelly) due to their new broke a$$ policy of only sending medal contenders.
Alternate evil empire possibility is Nike just pays NIYOMUKUNZI, DANIEL, and CHELANGAT more than they would ever make by attending to scratch.
This whole points thing is so stupid. Here we are, on the most popular running message board in the country, with some of the top fans in the country, with Letsrun owners/journalists at the meet, and we STILL aren't sure which women are going to Paris in the 10k.
The whole points thing should be scrapped. It's way too hard to follow. Just stick with the standard. Either you've gotten the standard or you haven't. Simple. Like it always used to be.
Gut feel is Valby will need more help to get in on ranking but haven't done the math.
Someone before hand said she'd need to run 31:30 and finish 2nd.
But a few more people could scratch right?

I kind of agree and I kind of don't. The Penn Relays Steeple was awesome. That wouldn't have happened without this system. Auto racing has decided championships and playoffs by points systems for decades. This could work. The problem is it's a hybrid system. If it was just a points system, it becomes way easier to understand.
