It seems to have dawned on Jakob that he’s not run a direct Olympic qualifier, and that there is the slimmest of chances he may not qualify on ranking, so he’s decided to run nationals.

10:57 Ingebrigtsen turns around: Runs the 5000 meters against Narve Gilje Nordås in the NM Jakob Asserson Ingebrigtsen unexpectedly runs the 5000 meters during the NM in Sandnes on Saturday. The organizer confirms this to NRK on Saturday morning. There he meets Narve Gilje Nordås. Thus Ingebrigtsen turns. The plan was to only run the 1500 meters during the NM. It has been an eventful week for Ingebrigtsen, who became a father for the first time earlier this week. The reversal means that there will be a duel with Narve Gilje Nordås on Saturday. Neither Ingebrigtsen nor Nordås has yet completed the Olympic requirement of 13.05. Both athletes currently have an Olympic place in the distance through the world ranking. But that does not mean a hundred percent safe place. In other words, it may depend on a good pace at the athletics stadium in Sandnes. The race starts at 1:45 p.m. Running and the National Championships in athletics are broadcast live on NRK TV and NRK 1.
Also a free stream at Nrk (probably no need of vpn): klick to the left on 12.00 Nm i friidrett. If you can’t find it, klick to the right on Vis hele dagen, and then on the left 12.00 Nm i friidrett. 5000m is 1 hour 40min out -1.45 pm CET.

Just learned that Jakob actually not have Qualified by Entry Standard (13:05.00) for the OlympicsAnd given the depth in many of the competitions this year we now actually have 36/42 spots taken by people that run below 13:05....
The whole discourse is strange. He didn’t run the qualifying time. He’s the top athlete on points. Barring crazy nationals results he’s safely in. I think he ran this mostly because he can, and denying Nordas a national title is a competitive thing for him too.

He 100% did it to spite Nordås, he looked at him like five times over the last lap. I don’t think they shook hands after the race either. Nordås actually ran pretty well when Jakob took off with two laps to go and Narve responded, but he got put down the last 100m.
