All the 400m dudes just do that event only. Some of the 100m guys do the 200m too but that's it. Why not just do all 3 and give yourself more chances at winning a medal? Norman runs a 9.8 in the 100 and a 19.7 in the 200 yet he didn't even run at trials for either of those. Makes no sense. Lyles probably runs at least a 44-mid in the 400m given his insane speed and speed endurance, yet he's too scared to touch that event at trials. Will never understand amazing talents who sell themselves short for no apparent reason
MAYBE somebody would if it the order of events was 100, 200, 400. it mostly depends on what you are going to prioritize.
like Jakob will run the 1500 and 5000 bc the 1500 is first. if he had to run the 5000 before the 1500, forget about it. maximizing the 1500 is priority number 1 for him.
Distance guys are even wimpier. Nobody is trying the 800/1500/3000at/5000/10000/marathon to get 6 medals in 1 games. Some of those events don’t even have heats so people could just run the final…

If they could win multiple then they would try. It's better to win one event than be 5th in two events. Only if someone's main event is first in the competition might they try to double in most cases. But if someone's better in a 400 and the 200 is first, but no shot at winning the 200 but they're a contender in the 400, then it makes sense for them to fully commit to the 400 and try to win it.
Noah Lyles is the best in the world at 100 and 200 and tried to run on the 4x400 at World Indoors and split a 45.68, which is much worse than anyone even in the semifinals in the 400 at the Olympic Trials. Speed endurance over 400 is simply a different kind of training and fitness that is too hard for the 100/200 guys to implement.

The 100/200 is doable as the training is similar.
The training for the 400 is remarkably different for the 100.
For the 100 there are lots of block starts and quick burst sprints 30-60M.
For the 400M: lots of 600s/300s and 200s with short rest periods.

i'm so serious when i say this what is up with this influx of idiots during trial and olympic season
Sprinters don't run all 3 events because rounds at national and international championships conflict with each other. Simple as that. Can't do a round of the 400 and then come back to run the 100 final 30 minutes later. Looking at the schedule for USAs and the Olympics could have told you everything you need to know.
Probably because the training, skill, and physiology of a good 200-400m runner is different than a 100-200m runner.
Also heats.
Michael Johnsons was the 200/400m Gold Medalist in '96 and held the WR for both....yet was only a 10.09 in the 100m.
There is a lot of power and technique in the 100m that doesn't exist in the 200 or 400m

This is why the "200 being your main event" makes no sense. You are either a 100/200 type or the 200/400 type. The 200 is a secondary event behind whichever event is your main, respectively.
If you can run a sub 20 second 200M, you should also be capable of either a sub 10 100M as well OR a sub 44.5 400M, maybe even faster. Focusing on just the 200M would just be a waste

Leaving aside the physiological demands the scheduling would be virtually impossible unless you were just good enough to qualify to each but not good enough to make it out of the first round of any.
Just looking at the men
Aug 3 100m Prelim and round 1 Aug 4 100m Semis/Finals

It makes sense if you have amazing top speed but take some time to wind up.
Sifan Hassan just read this and is now rolling on the floor laughing.
Funny thing is that Sifan got the idea from a friend who was either relatively ignorant or just outright trolling about tripling. Not sure she was laughing right after, though.
"After the 10,000, Hassan sat on the ground and pleaded for water from the volunteers, then crawled to an area beside the track where she placed ice packs under the soles of her feet for about seven minutes before she found the energy to stand.
...
Where did she get the idea? Hassan said it started last year with a joke from a friend who asked her why she wouldn’t just run all three distances at the Olympics.
“At first I had to laugh,” Hassan said. “But then I thought, ‘nobody does that.’” That made her want to try."
For much of the year, Hassan thought she’d do two, but a loss over 1500 meters to Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon at the Monaco Diamond League in July changed her thinking, her anger fueling a fresh desire [Side note: Hope this happens to Mu].
“Losing makes me crazy; I can climb (a) mountain when I lose,” she said. “I was really scared to make the triple, but when I didn’t get what I wanted in Monaco, I told my manager, ‘I’m going to do three. I don’t care what happens, I’m going to do it.’”
Yes people there are some great Runner's World articles to go with the recycled stuff. Incredible story:

A guy won the 100/200/400 at our state meet a few years ago in like 10.5, 20.9, and 46.3, and ran all of them in the span of like just over an hour. If some noname high school kid can do that, you're telling me pros can't? Come on man
