I got a lot of downvotes for saying that running 10 minute miles is generally a bad idea, unless you’re roughly a 4 hour marathoner. I do zero miles slower than 9 minute paces and less than 5% of my miles slower than 8:30 pace.
I’m in my 40s and shooting for a sub 3 marathon. I run about 35-40 miles per week in the summer with 2 full rest days per week. Most of my 6-8 mile runs average 7:30-7:50 pace. I aim to do one faster run per week, for example 8 miles with 3 miles at roughly marathon pace and maybe the 4th mile at 10K pace. I don’t really go longer than 12 miles in the summer as the dew point doesn’t get below 73 or so until mid-October. I will do a 5 miler at about 8:20 pace for recovery, which feels pretty easy.
I know I should do more mileage as I get into a real marathon training block and I’ll do some more interval work as well. When I get to 50+ miles per week, should I incorporate 9 minute pace? Over 2 years without a coach I’ve gone from a 3:22 to a 3:07 marathon and 1:35 to 1:27 half. When I was running in my early 30s, I was a 2:53 and 1:19 runner. I’m happy to accept that I’m doing it wrong.
