I'm in my early 20s (male) and I had a long distance running background (did it from 2021-2023) before I started to run middle distance.
In late 2023 I started to run with a new team and switched from a lot of aerobic/easy longer running to shorter, more intense workouts. I took a two month break (due to some exams) before I started and so I ended up with some shin/calf pain after about two months of hard training with track workouts and running in spikes.
Then in Winter I couldn't run without pain at all and so I started to build up again from 15k a week and cross training to about 40k a week (still with some cross training on the bike). The pain has gotten less over time, but if I don't emphasise recovery enough and just do a little too much (such as standing for a few hours) the pain just gets worse again.
The most frustrating thing about this is that the pain is even there during everyday activities such as walking, standing or just sitting at a desk.
The pain is located on the inside of the lower leg (in the lower third), where the muscle is attached to the bone (right next to the soleus). I also had physiotherapy for a few months now, but it just doesn't really get much better. There has been progress over time but it just takes too long and I'm starting to get a bit impatient.
It shouldn't be a stress fracture since it's on both sides and the physio didn't think it could be one.
Has anyone ever had something similar to this? And are there any things I might be missing to help recovery?
