Eric Holt worked a day job at a psych ward and trained by himself at midnight to pursue a shot only he believed in. At U.S. trials, it could all pay off.
I think you mean 3d fastest in his heat. He's 6th fastest in the field, 2 seconds behind the big three. And TBH, he's not that far ahead of several of the other munchkins.
He's going to make the final and could make the team, although it's not likely.
One small discrepancy with the article. Tom Nohilly (who's a great guy btw) absolutely knew about Eric way before they "discovered" him night-running. He coached at John Jay-Cross River high school when Eric was at Carmel high school and they were in the same league in Northern Westchester/Putnam NY and the two teams competed almost weekly.
As far as Eric making the team, he's clearly a semi-longshot, but he's certainly capable and I'll be not entirely surprised and jumping out of my chair if he does.
he has a decent shot at making the team. He beat Kessler in their last race and almost beat Jake Wightman.
Don't be silly. Beating Wightman was worthless. Since Worlds in Eugene, Wightman hasn't been Wightman. He didn't race at all last year, and has only raced 3 1500s this year. His fastest race was against Holt.
What that race showed is how far Wightman is from recovered, not how awesome Holt is.
If Holt makes the team, it will show how weak the US 1500 group is, not how strong Holt is.

Additionally, I'm not sure how Nohily "sent Holt a direct message through Strava" in 2020, when Strava didn't introduce that feature until 2024.

You're wrong and you're right.
He didn't actually beat him but if he did it, the scalp of a world champ isn't nothing for a 30 year old without a sponsor. Plus didnt Wightman 4th place a 3:47-high mile at Pre this year (worth at least a 3:30 or 3:31 1500, isnt it?) That'd be better than a 3:34 at NYC.
I do agree with you though that NYC was as much of an underperformance by Wightman as an overperformance by Holt and if Holt made the OG team, it wouldnt reflect greatly on the state of the 1500 for Team USA. Nuguse, Hocker, and Teare should be team, right?
