Suppose your school is split up into two teams. Team A consists of those who have ever run for the XC team, and Team B consists of everyone else. An athlete who runs track but not XC is generally* part of Team B, but an athlete who runs both track and XC is in Team A. *A senior who ran XC as a freshman and quit halfway through the season is in Team A, even if that person is now on the track team.
The track meet is spread out into two days to allow for recovery time (and to run all of the heats). All events are contested except for the steeple and hammer throw. A win is 3 points, second place is 2 points, and third place is 1 point.
Who ends up with the most points? The XC team, or everyone else?
