It seems to me that every Running Influencer type, some racing at a pretty decent level (which is neither here nor there really), seems to train like this:
Marathon - “Summer of Speed” - Marathon
The rationale being that to get comfortable at a faster marathon pace you need to get comfortable at a faster 5-10k pace.
This all sounds good, but I’m wondering if the underlying logic is flawed?
There’s a key group of athletes that I hear very little about when it comes to training between Marathons: Elite Marathoners. It’s not like Obiri or Kipchoge are running 5-10k in the summer months.
At the end of the day we’re mostly hobbyjoggers so it doesn’t really matter but I’m curious whether focusing on building strength rather than speed would be a better approach to bridge and level up between Marathons?
