Been an active Catholic for 71 years. I don't know of anyone wearing a rosary around their neck; maybe hanging from their rear view mirror in their car but not around their neck.
Catholics do not do this and consider this to be disrespectful. Your post is also disrespectful b/c you are one of many that likes to start hate speech threads about different religions and races. Please stop. I do remember Madonna doing this in the 80s and it was considered controversial.
The article you posted explains this far better than anyone on LRC can. As a Catholic catechist, we teach students that the rosary is not a fashion statement or jewelry but an aid to focus our minds on the task at hand, which is showing reverence to God.
I think it is usually done reverently. It reminds them of the prayer. This is common in less wealthy areas maybe to offer strength in difficult environments.
Most Catholics get their first Rosary in 2nd grade a few days before their first communion. Invariably most of the class starts putting them on as necklaces. These days the teacher calmly explains that they aren't to be worn as necklaces. In my day the nun would freak out and start throwing backhands.
Any Catholic that wears a rosary as a necklace is too young to have been taught by an old school nun.
Grew up Catholic and went to Catholic school and church regularly. Never saw anyone wearing rosaries as a necklace.
Setting aside the OP's likely-troll question, what about the scapular? How common is this among devout Catholics. My father wore one, and I remember we took some care with it at the time of his death in his mid-70s (made sure it got safely from hospital to funeral home).
I just found the idea puzzling, but that's mainly my own perspective. Went to Catholic school but was an atheist from a young age.
Anyway, maybe this is off-topic, but I never really "got" the idea of the scapular in modern society. Maybe that was part of the point / the appeal to those who wear it. But is it common?
Rosary in the hands, Miraculous Medal around the neck.
Or I believe the Dominican order, men and women, wear rosaries around their waists. Those are the long full ones with 15 or 20 decades, instead of the usual 5.
All religions are basically a form of hippies, and hippies love beads.
There is also usually music, and sometimes dancing. It doesn't really matter what you say, if you say it reverently over beads. It's the beads and reverence that count, not the words. That's why "speaking in tongues" is a thing.

.
Scapulars are meant to be worn. A well known a mountain runner and devout Catholic wears one.
