Im just getting back to running after a stress reaction. I got this stress reaction about 2 months after a pretty bad stress fracture that kept me out for 12 weeks. Both were in my tibia (different spots). My shins pretty much started hurting immediately when i got back into running the first time, but my coach said it was shin splints and it'd go away as i kept running. It did not and turned out to be the stress reaction.
I suspect that my coach rushed me back into speedwork too soon after the first injury.
Does anyone have experience with adding in speedwork in a safe way when returning from injury? I figured I'd get my mileage into the 20s or 30s (before the injuries I was running 50-65 miles/week consistently) and maybe start just with some strides then some 200s or fartlek stuff?
