At one time people did. Now there is simply oversaturation. There used to be only Footlocker Cross Country, Nike Indoor Nationals, and Adidas Outdoor Nationals. I used to attend AOCs at NC State years ago and ALL of the top high schoolers were there. Now, every shoe brand needs to have their own meet and I think Nike has done everything it can to gain a monopoly. They created their own outdoor meet and then just outspent Adidas until it buried the AOC meet. They are still trying to bury the Footlocker meet, too.
They need to get rid of some of these "national championship" meets and just have one CC, one indoor, and one outdoor. There are people who ran this week in Eugene who just ran in Philadelphia. Seriously? These are high school kids, not professionals. No need for cross country flights to run a couple laps around a track.
I think this meet has sort of become a 'nationals for everyone else'. But, for what it's worth, it was super hot in NC this weekend and that impacted times a lot. The middle school 2 mile was won in 9:38 though, which isn't too shabby.
THAT adidas Outdoor Champs became the original Nike Outdoor Nationals -> New Balance Nationals Outdoor -> Nike Outdoor Nationals because adidas was sponsoring the NSAF meet. Before adidas it had other title sponsors.
The current adidas meet has no connection to the original.
New Balance currently owns their branded meet. Its only existed for a few years.
NSAF is the only one that has and kind of historical significance. The title sponsor has changed a few times when contracts ended and brands decided to spend money elsewhere.
