TL;DR My teammates constantly put me down for creating my own high mileage and intensity training plan rather than following that of my coach. What should i do?
For Context: I am a rising HS senior with two years of track and xc experience. I’ve run 17:43,4:47, and 10:08. I don’t believe these times are representative of my potential as this past spring I burned out early in the season and struggled to race well. Last winter I put in a tremendous 12 week training block with competitive swim each morning followed by 55 miles each week but eventually had an injury/burned out otherwise I was perfectly healthy and making great progress. My coach has over 20+ years of coaching, with NXN qualifiers, many D1 recruits, as well as an Olympic trials 5th place finisher. However I don’t believe he knows my body as well as I do so I choose to create my own training plan based on the training of pros such as Clayton young and others.
Despite burning out early in the season last week, I’m optimistic about my training this summer as I’ve already done a 30 mile, 50 mile, and 55 mile week and have started double threshold workouts this week. My inspiration for workouts comes from pros like Clayton young and i have begun closing some easy runs in 6:00 to simulate a "fatigue mile". I continue to choose my own training plan however this time after letting my coach know and being given the green light to do so.
The biggest thing that hurts me is the critique of my teammates. Having been apart of a successful program, many of my teammates including my programs top runners, are extremely adherent to our coach’s training plan and believe that my training will only lead to injury. Every day they critique my “recklessness” with running but this is what I believe will work best for me and I haven’t had a major injury because of it. Am I wrong to create my own training plan based off of what I see pros do and what I think is most effective for my body or should I follow the plan that my coach gives the team.
