Even crazier was that the first lap was 79.7 seconds and closed the last 800m in 2:15. If someone took that race out harder, I’m sure she would’ve gotten the record.

It was not the national record. Mary Cain has the record - 9:38 .
National outdoor record, though. It's really nice to see her get a record she can actually keep for more than 5 minutes, unlike the mile at Hoka.
Plus, I'm getting a year free of RunnerSpace+ for winning their Instagram prediction contest for this race!! (I predicted she'd win in 9:42, so only :24 off).

Congratulations!
24sec is a big delta, but maybe you were the only one that picked Zealand over Hedengren, Leachman or Ritzenhein.
What an upset! What a way to finish a high school career, with back-to-back high school records in the mile and two-mile!!

Sorry to rain on your parade, but unless you were the person that guessed Zealand winning in 9:41.78 (winning time was 9:41.76), I’m not sure that you won…

Argh you're right, missed that initially while I was scrolling through all the posts. If I ever need a soothsayer I'll hire that person...
Still, glad I picked Zealand. I had a feeling it wouldn't be Leachman given her recent hamstring issues and DNFing Portland.
everyone got smoked. every high school girl who has ever run a 2 mile outdoors just got smoked...
I wonder if this kind of incredible progress continues for Zealand at Liberty. She will basically be training under the exact same conditions she was as a high schooler: coached by her mom, using Liberty's track and facilities, and running with Liberty athletes. And whatever theyve been doing its been working...

all they said was she got smoked. I can live with that as a fan of hers. not the ranting anti Leachman posts we sometimes see from you know who. easy to point out how stupid the statement is by showing just how much faster this time was than any other before her. and sometimes exposing stupid is more useful than ignoring it. plus it gave me a good segue to ask about Zealands future training.
