As distance runners we are all a little OCD. As a group, we tend to be hard working, intelligent and successful. Those same qualities can lend us to being addicted to things like social media and chat rooms. Even when I was in college, I witnessed as perfectly intelligent and competent people disrupted their lives to get on internet chat rooms and online gaming sites operating on dial up signals. While I have been mostly successful in life, there have been times when I felt I have spent too much time trolling.
Most Lents, I would take a break and reconnect with those things in life I truly enjoy. I spent the past couple weeks and weekends in national forests and national parks of the west with my wife and kids, largely away from cellular service, and it was fantastic. So after getting back, posting a couple of times and seeing the same posters constantly pushing the same agenda in an attempt at self gratification, I have decided I will take a summer break from LRC.
I plan on running more, fishing more, exploring more and getting back to all those things I used to do before the internet and cellphones distracted us from our lives. I encourage those others who spend way too much time posting on here to do the same. Take some risks. Ask a girl out. Go on some rave runs. Go climb a mountain. Go on a date with your wife. Teach your kids how to fish, ride a bike, kick a soccer ball, throw a curveball, etc. Life is out there waiting to be lived. Get out there and do it.
