Kerr is the only lock there is and he's obviously on the team.
So who else will make the next 2 spots? Wightman, Giles, Gourley?

Hey, you saw my Gourley post! as I said there, I believe the 2024 UK men's 1500m team is the hardest in the world to make because Kerr has unofficially taken a spot and the other 4 guys are stupid fast.
No disrespect to the others but if you follow Mills at all, he is on another level in the past 12 months. he is a long shot Norwegian method 200k/week medal threat after an Olympic taper.
Toss up between Wightman and Gourley.
Fogg is the wildcard with moments of fitness but some really young looking race tactics.
It’s wide open for sure. Gourlay back to good form (surprisingly quickly after injury). I hope Wightman makes it but he’s had a few dodgy races recently.
I am a big George Mills fan but he’s looking a little inconsistent. Good 5k at the Euros though.
There is nothing unofficial about Kerr's selection. It's clear in the selection policy.

Thank you kind internet stranger for doing all the actual work on our group project.

Mills is the only one who wants a faster race. Feels like it will be desperately slow in which case Gourley/Wightman close races faster than Mills.
Gourley and Fogg looking quite plain in that euro final.
Yes looked terrible. Fogg I didn’t expect much, I just think he’s not that good. Gourley? Seems like the rounds might be an issue with his lack of training, unless we learn of an illness/injury.
I am a Drake Alum so I love Fogg but he is not there yet. His Milrose run was great but it’s reverted back to the mean since then. Looking more and more like a 1 off performance. Would love to be wrong but I don’t see him ever being a legit threat on the world stage.

I think his lack of training meant the rounds took it out of him. He looked better at the Prefontaine and surprised himself he said. I don’t think his tactic of trying to keep up with Jakob was the best.
I’m gonna say Fogg out of the running now. So I’m thinking Wightman (as he has a decent kick) and Mills for the team. British champs will be interesting.

Yes Mills would win in a fitness contest. But if it’s a ~3:40 race, Gourley and Giles have pretty massive speed. I don’t really trust Mills’ last 50 in a super-slow race, we’ll see.

Maybe recency bias from us watching his close in the euro 5000m, or Oslo.
But go back and re-watch Milrose and he can hang.
I'm betting on more rested legs keeping it honest with Gourley, if maybe not Wightman.

Mills is definitely NOT way ahead of the non-Kerr pack.
- 2nd in Rabat, Giles only 0.03 behind for 3rd
- only 7th in Oslo, behind Giles, Hoare, Tim, Jakob, Nader, Habz
He’s basically on par with Giles, who’s seems behind world medal contenders Cheryiut/Kerr/Nuguse/Ingy.
Obviously it all depends on British Champs, but I think even just based on Pre (Gourley 4th, Wightman 5th) they’ve shown they’re closer to the global top 5. Mills will probably even underperform at UK Champs, because it won’t be as fast as a World/Olympic final. (2023 won in 3:46, 2022 won in 3:40)
Also if I was Mills, I’d just focus on the 5k. Essentially guaranteed to make the team (no Brit is beating him at the national champs) and he finished 2nd at Euros so he definitely has a shot in a tactical Olympic final at a medal, probably more so than the 1500.

Great points on the 15, will make British champs a must watch race.
Mills did diversify with his 5k project, but I/he/US mid-runners would all agree that there is no medal hope in the nuclear arms race that has become the 5000m.
Not saying there is medal hope in the 15 either, but
Mills has stated in interviews he plans to double, but that he's a 15 guy. similar to Drew Hunter's explanations, they all see a smaller fitness margin and larger chance for chaos as the better bet.
It's probably what's keeping Teare clinging to the 15 as well. while they all have low 3:3X speed, just roll the dice.
I will say I'm not well educated on Giles and should watch some back catalog and interviews.
Mills would be the favourite for the final spot but he has a big decision because the 1500/5000 double is almost impossible. If he did it, he'd have to run the 1500 heats on Saturday, then on Sunday it's the 5000 final at 3pm followed by the 1500 final at 5pm. He won't get pre-selected because too many men have the 5k standard and he's not a prior medallist like Kerr and Hodgkinson. I think he should go for the 5000. He'd dominate that field and he has a medal shot in Paris, at least as good as his 1500 medal chances. If he does the double at the trials, he could miss out on the Olympics altogether because I wouldn't back him to come through in that 1500 after running the 5k.
