My coach and I have been planning for a sub 2:16 finish at grandmas marathon and I am tapering nicely. For this race we used a combination of training based on Percy Cerutty’s advice to “run like a chicken clawing at the air” and Zatopek modified training based 100x400 and periods of all out 100m hill sprints holding my breath. My coach is old school to say the least, and of the opinion that Lydiard was a quack and that speed can be reached exclusively through negative splits. Thus I am planning on running in Mizuno Wave Universe 3’s (no super foarm) and Every run, interval, and step of my buildup has thus been a negative split. Here are my planned splits for Grandmas:
1. Mile 1: 5:12
2. Mile 2: 5:11
3. Mile 3: 5:10
4. Mile 4: 5:09
5. Mile 5: 5:08
6. Mile 6: 5:07
7. Mile 7: 5:06
8. Mile 8: 5:05
9. Mile 9: 5:04
10. Mile 10: 5:03
11. Mile 11: 5:02
12. Mile 12: 5:01
13. Mile 13: 5:00
14. Mile 14: 4:59
15. Mile 15: 4:58
16. Mile 16: 4:57
17. Mile 17: 4:56
18. Mile 18: 4:55
19. Mile 19: 4:54
20. Mile 20: 4:53
21. Mile 21: 4:52
22. Mile 22: 4:51
23. Mile 23: 4:50
24. Mile 24: 4:49
25. Mile 25: 4:48
26. Mile 26: 4:47
27. Last 0.2 miles: approximately 4:46 pace
this should put me at 2:15 but my coach is saying it doesn’t even matter if I run OTQ so long as I negative split because “that’s how the trials are going to be.”
I’m a little nervous but feeling sharp.
letsrun, am I ready for a big PR??
