I haven't seen any threads on this but I agree. Sahlman needs more strength and exposure to races like these to become the best version of a runner he can be.
Cook executes a smart race, finishes a close 2nd to returning worlds qualifier Waskom: “Jerry is a terrible coach who can’t coach middle distance athletes! Cook loses lol in front of the home crowd lol” Sahlman chokes, takes 4th after setting the NCAA record this season: “wow, he ran a really great race, just used up too much energy at the wrong time! Smith is an amazing all around coach”
Yet many people have been picking him to finish top 3 at the US Olympic Trials. LOL
He’s only a sophomore. Look at what Nico did after additional strength/conditioning/racing. Colin will be the same. Give him 2 years and I expect he’ll meet those unfair expectations which were based on 1 race.
Imagine getting this assblasted about a 20 year old who just got 4th at nationals because a handful of anonymous internet posters were too hyperbolic for your taste

Actually agree. The other athletes around him looked much more powerful. He may have more growing up to do, his musculature reminded me more of Sifan Hassan than a 1500m strength runner.
Not a great photo below but all I could find. If he puts on a bit more strength, his kick will be stronger.

I give him a good chance to make the team in 2028. Not this year

I enjoy seeing overzealous fanboys cry.
I don’t see anyone crying about this. Ur making something out of nothing.
Colin Sahlman did great for a sophomore, leading the whole thing and threatening to win but not being able to keep the lead down the stretch. He might be favored more with a quicker pace. Waskom knows to time his kick, sometimes a bit too late but right on the money here. No one coaches the 1500m like Andy Powell right now. It's notable that the field included a 3:30 guy in Spencer, 3:33 guys in Sahlman (high 3:33) and Essayi, and at least one 3:34 guy in Wascom, and they kicked in 52.6 in a 3:39 race on a fast surface. Compare to Ryun's 49.6-50 (36 last 300m) in a 3:38 1500m on dirt in 1967!
