I'm starting to get pumped for tonight's 1500 final and it got me thinking. What's the most number of people you've ever seen battling it out for the win of a major 1500? Have you ever seen 5 guys within like 0.2 of a second of each other?
Now, the more I think about it, I don't expect 5 guys to be within .2 a second of a 3:31 guy but I'm just wondering if there's ever been a race with like 5 guys diving at the line in a 1500.
I did a little bit of research. Since 2000, the closets 5th was to 1st at NCAA was 2015 when it was .40 seconds. I found a replay of that race, and there were a TON of guys with 100 to go right there. That could happen tonight. Here is the final 300 of that race:
If my research was correct, here is the closest 5 races between 1st and 5th at NCAAs since 2000.
2015- 0.40
2010 - 0.43
2023- 0.55
2022 - 0.65
2002 - 0.67
The 2010 race was also quite wild with 100 meters to go as there were 8 guys all right there:
