For the lifetime bragging rights of being a US national champion in the event of your choice, or join the official list of people to reach the summit of everest. Which do you choose?
Whichever one you choose, not only will it come with bragging rights, but you will also have retrograde and anterograde memory of you accomplishing the feat.
US national champ, hands down. There are upper-class tourists who have made Everest's summit thanks to the best sherpas money can buy. To say, "I was the best in my country on that given day" is far more meaningful.
I would choose US champ in any event over summiting Mt Everest. All you need to summit Everest is money and time. To be a US champ in an athletic event requires an immense level of innate talent at a particular discipline. I find that significantly cooler and more impressive.
I don't even believe this "highest mountain in the world" stuff. I've seen no proof that it's the tallest.
I've been higher anyhow, in airplanes. They already had airplanes when the first people climbed that hill. They could have just flown over it, what's the point?

Everest is a lot harder than money and time. But most national championships (not US national champ in chutes and ladders) require a ton more skill and dedication.

Unfortunately the Everest summittee.
Not because it's a bigger sporting feat, it's not, but people who are doing that have lots more money than the average US national champion.
In the bigger picture nobody cares about any of that.

Mt. Everest for me. It is hard and it is difficult. I've been to the base camp and Kala Patthar. Not everyone or anyone can do it. You may have difficulties adapting to the altitude which would make it impossible for you to climb and descend the mountain. You can have "the best Sherpas in the world" but at the end of the day it is you who gets you up and down the mountain. The Sherpas can not "carry" you to the summit.
