NC State transfers TANK senior year

Chasing ncstate is a lousy idea wether you are an incoming frosh or grad transfer.

This original poster clearly has an anti-NC State agenda and is leaving out key information in order to push that agenda.

Amaris Tyynismaa - You did not mention that she finished #4 in the 5000m at the June 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships. That is a higher finish in any outdoor track event than she ever had at Alabama. Amaris also ran her PR in the 5000m outdoor while at NC State in April of 2023.

Hannah Steelman - You mentioned that she finished 23rd at the XCcompletely omitted that she finished 23rd at the (2019) NCAA cross country championships while competing for Wofford. However, you deliberately omitted the fact that she finished #5 at the March 2021 NCAA cross country championships, and that she finished 24th at the November 2021 NCAA cross country championships (while dealing with an achilles injury all season). Steelman ran her PRs for the 3000m (indoor), 3000m Steeple, and 5000m outdoor, 5k cross country, and 6k cross country all while running for NC State.

You did not mention senior transfer Alexandra Hays at all. She transferred as a senior to NC State from Columbia in the fall of 2021. She had finished 101st and 84th at the NCAA cross country championships in 2018 and 2019. Then at the November 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships while running for NC State she finished 22nd in the country. Hays ran her PRs for 5k cross country, 5000m indoor, Mile (indoor), 3000m (indoor), and 10,000m outdoor while running for NC State. Her highest finish at the NCAA outdoor championships while competing for Columbia was a 12th place finish in the 5000m in 2019. At NC State she finished 5th in the 10,000m at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor championships.

Also,

Regarding Amaris Tyynismaa...I left out that she also ran her Mile PR while running for NC State, with a 4:32.56 in February 2023....which was faster than six mile times she ran while competing at Alabama.

So Amaris runs her PRs in the 5000m and Mile while at NC State, better than she ran at Alabama...and you call that "tanking"??

Sorry for bungling my initial summary on Hannah Steelman with a broken sentence in my initial post in the thread. I was typing all this up fast. I meant to say that (as the OP pointed out), she finished 23rd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2019 while competing at Wofford. But the OP completely omitted the fact that Steelman finished #5 at the March 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships while competing for NC State.

She also seemed to take a big swing at the 10000 going with the top 3 for quite a while, and it did not end well. Had she ran more conservatively perhaps it would have ended better.

Also, you can't make an argument that Amaris Tyynismaa "regressed" in cross country at NC State. She only ran one season (fall 2023) in cross country for NC State, and she was recovering from an injury in the summer of 2023 during that cross country season. She missed the first few races of the 2023 cross country season, and then was a DNF at the ACC Championships and Regionals -- because of both still getting into shape, and due to "struggling mentally" (as Amaris said in interviews) while getting back into a prope racing mentality after the injury. She had run her PR in the 5000m outdoor in April 2023, a few months before the fall 2023 cross country season. So she was clearly in great 5k/6k shape for fall 2023 cross country, if not for the injury in summer 2023.

You are being misleading, also.

Tyynismaa may have run her mile PR but her 1500s were much better at Alabama. Her RACES were much better at Alabama.

According to her World Athletics bio, her best performances are:

1) 3000m - 1143 points (Dec 2022 - Alabama)
2) 1500m - 1130 (May 2021 - Alabama)
2) mile - 1130 (Feb 2023 - NC State, transferred only a month earlier)
4) 1500m - 1128 (June 2021 - Alabama)
5) mile - 1125 (Feb 2021 - Alabama)
6) 3000m - 1116 (Feb 2021 - Alabama)
7) 1500m - 1115 (May 2021 - Alabama)
8) 1500m - 1114 (June 2021 - Alabama)
9) 1500m - 1111 (Mar 2023 - NC State)
10) mile - 1109 (Feb 2021 - Alabama)

So to sum up...the reality is that most transfers have been very successful and IMPROVED at NC State.

Amaris Tyynismaa ran her PRs in the Mile and 5000 while at NC State, faster than she ever ran at Alabama, and has her highest finish at an event at the NCAA Outdoor championships while at NC State, finishing #4 in the 5000m.

Hannah Steelman made big improvements at NC State from what she did at Wofford, running PRs at NC State in nearly every event she competed in -- including the 3000m indoor, 3000m Steeple, 5000m outdoor, and 5k and 6k in cross country, and has her highest finish at the NCAA cross country championships (#5).

Alexandra Hays makes outstanding improvements while at NC State, going from 101st and 84th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships while at Columbia to finishing 22nd in November 2021 while at NC State. And Hays also runs PRs in nearly every event while at NC State - 5k cross country, 5000m indoor, Mile (indoor), 3000m (indoor), and 10,000m outdoor.

Seymour is the lone outlier among recent transfers. But she did run a PR in the 5k in cross country in September 2022. She faded somewhat over the latter half of the 2022 cross country season, which was in large part due to battling sickness (confirmed in an interview with Coach Henes, I believe, as a I recall reading).

And another thing, Tyynismaa made it to the semifinals of the Olympic Trials at the end of her freshman year at Alabama. Are we going to see her in the Trials in 2024? Nope.

The biggest tank senior year was Tuohy. Henes is the best recruiter in the NCAA but she is not a good coach.

Complete nonsense. Tuohy only ran cross country her senior year (2023). She was having an outstanding 2023 cross country season all the way up to Regionals, and then got sick a day or so before the November 2023 NCAA Championships, but still battled through it and got a 5th place finish.

As for Henes, she has taken many recruits that were not that highly rated (such as Samantha Bush and Grace Hartman), and turned them into All-Americans. And as I noted with the stats I posted above, look at the great improvements Hannah Steelman and Alexandra Hays made after transferring to NC State, to just cite two more examples of the development and improvement under Henes.

As a former Tar Heel distance runner, let me show some support for the post above. NCSU can take kids who are good-but-not-great in HS and turn them into All Americans. And at this year's XC NCAA, Tuohy either had the flu or COVID. Henes is a great coach who is incredibly supportive and remains a positive influence after they graduate. I bleed Carolina Blue, but I know enough to respect a good program. Kevin Keatts and Dave Doeren can suck an egg, though. Go Heels!

I think NC State’s philosophy is hard work, consistency, and perseverance, with particular emphasis on volume and strength training. It is not for everyone. The up and down actually shows NC State has more honesty and integrity as running is supposed to be hard after all.

With that said, if I want to take a shortcut, I would choose a couple other schools over NC State. Running cross country in an air conditioned gym sounds fun only for some people.

Let's see...

Hannah Steelman and Allie Hays. Huge parts of the NC State 2021 National Champions XC team.

Sydney Seymour. Part of the 2022 National Champions XC team. Ran but did not score in the championship race. Nevada Mareno had a huge race.

Amaris Tyyinismaa. Huge part of the NC State 2023 National Champions XC team.

I doubt any of these National Champion runners regret their time at NC State.

Transfer for NC State if you want to automatically be in contention to win the NCAA XC team championship.

But if you want to be a successful pro - stay away. Providence, OSU, and Colorado have proven to be much better in producing pro women runners.

NAU's women have yet to have any success as pro runners too.

She transferred in Jan 2023, how much fitness from a new training program is to be gained in that one month? Her indoor mile PB is mostly from everything she did at Alabama.

Henes ruined Tuohy. She was very talented. It was a fake illness at nationals if you didn't know.
