The most important thing is fitness. The more fit you are, the more tough you are. The mental side is overrated.

Talent being equal, the best trained most prepared athletes win.
“mental toughness” is for lazy people and head cases.

Talent, training, and preparation being equal, the more mentally tough athletes win.
also: “talent, training, and preparation are more important than mental toughness” (true) is not the same thing as “mental toughness is a myth” (false).
moreover: any chance that a certain amount and type of mental toughness are part of the self-discipline required for appropriate training/preparation?
I had a linebacker who was tougher than you can even fathom. he was 6 foot 3 290 lbs. He had the strongest mental toughness I have ever seen. He ran 15:40 for 5k in gym class just to see if he could. They took him straight to the hospital and everyone clapped as he raised a fist when they lifted him into the ambulance. Mental toughness is everything. The fitness is optional.

Cute troll: “the fitness is optional”
Let’s see if we can pull the pendulum all the way to one side then all the way to the other one, because binary thinking is always right

A whole bunch of people have run faster than 15:40.
Prove it.
I'm not really sure what you are trying to say, but I don't believe he was non-binary if that answers your questions.
