Hi, amateur hobby jogger here with the goal of breaking 20mins 5k by end of this year (roughly 6-7months time). Looking for advice on whether I should build more mileage or hit harder paces, or both.
History - middle distance swimmer, no/low childhood running background. Currently 34yo, 179cm, 85kg. Starting casual running since 2021 (2-3 times a week), been taking this seriously since Jul last year (5-6 times a week). 5k timed trial 23:20, 10k timed trial 49:58 and half Mara race was 1:55:00. Currently doing 4 easy days, 1 interval day and 1 progression/long run day. Mileage averaging 45-50ks for the last few weeks.
I’ve brought down my 5k from 37mins in 2021 to 23:20 now and am looking to push hard towards sub-20. Any tips on how to focus for 5k? Mainly, I’m wondering if I should build mileage up to 70-80ks or focus on quality intervals…
