Surprisingly, Wikipedia is probably the best place for this info. They take into account NFHS ratified records, T&F News lists, records set in pro races, etc. Very complete list.
The list of United States high-school national records in track and field is separated by indoor and outdoor and boys and girls who have set a national record in their respective events. While these records have been compiled...

Can you explain the 3 boy's times in wikipedia for 1600 as compared to the nfhs 2 times?
Alan Webb's two 1600m times are splits/conversions from 1 mile races. The 3:59.x was an enroute split from a mile race at Arcadia. The 3:51.x is an enroute split or a conversion from his mile race at the Prefontaine Classic. Griffith's 3:57.x was an actual 1600m race that was run at his state meet.
NFHS only recognizes races that were run in high school only races that are at meets that are sanctioned by actual state high school associations.

For me, NFHS records are fair for everyone. Drew Griffith and German Fernandez running 3:57 and 8:34 at their state meet for 1600/3200. Every us high school runner had an opportunity to challenge those times.
Alan Webb and Lukas V times comes from prefontaine classic. A professional race opportunity that was only given to a few high schoolers in history.
Who knows what Drew Griffith and Daniel Simmons could run if they were given that opportunity. I bet it would be faster than Lukas V

At the end of the day, Webb still ran a 3:53 mile. I don’t think it should be discredited because he had good competition and conditions. Anyone these days can get themselves into a good meet with the opportunity to run fast.

What number do I tell people is the 1600 national record for boys? People frequently ask.
Well, it depends how technical you want to get and who you're speaking to. In broad terms, for a general audience, I think it's most fair to use Webb's 3:53.43y, which converts to 3:52.03 for 1600m.
But, speaking ever more broadly and for the point of the 1500/1600/Mile realm of racing: Kessler's 3:34.36 1500m was run during his HS season, converting to 3:51.35y which would be about 3:50.15 for 1600m.
This thread merely confirms my confusion. Wikipedia say 3:51 for Webb It is pink which says legacy event. 3200 has 4 different times for 3200, two of which are the same color which makes no sense.
