I'm curious what tips people have for a mini training block to focus on improving 400 meter speed. I am in my mid 30s, and have focused on the 1500-5000m for most of the past 15 years. I did race a marathon last fall, and while it went well enough, I don't necessarily plan on racing a marathon every year.
My personal bests are:
400m: 54 (in practice, hand timed)
1500: 3:52
5000: 14:51
Marathon: 2:29
Currently, I'd guess my fitness is:
400m: 57.5
1500: 4:10
5000: 15:05
My basic question is how much is it possible to lower my 400 meter time in a short summer block when I don't have much else planned. I have about a month of time without any serious races planned, and then some travel that will interrupt regular training. I'll probably start my next block of longer distance training at that point.
I don't see myself doing much weightlifting in preparation for sprinting, but I'm fine doing pretty much only sprint workouts as far as running is concerned (not worried about the longer races getting tougher in the short term).
