Great race by Allie Zealand, even though the record only lasted a few minutes.
But Zealand should still have at least one more mile race in high school, so maybe she can get the mile record back.
Also, Zealand has a shot at the 2 mile record. Zealand vs Leachman vs Hedengren vs Shea vs Ritzenhein at Brooks PR 2 mile is going to be wild.
A few changes in her training and she'll come back a New Zealand.
Allie's record is still valid. Running 4:30.x in a high school race is arguably a tougher feat than 4:28.x in a pro race

Good point. Zealand had to run the entire last lap by herself. Engelhardt had a "pacer" all the way to the line.
But either way, those times were both crazy fast.
On another note, Zealand had no intention of qualifying for the Olympic Trials in the 1500, but tonight's 4:30 in the mile changes that. Might that be fast enough for Zealand to sneak into the Trials? What's the conversion that USATF is using for mile times vs 1500 times?

That appears to be what happened last night.
By the way she will be running for her mother coach at Liberty next year. Her mother ran for Liberty and was the 2002 NCAA D1 National Champion in the indoor mile.

My daughter was coached by Heather Zealand at Liberty University. Heather is a great coach. Cares about her athletes. Very humble person.
OP, be careful about using headlines like that. You know who is just chomping at the bit to jump all over another young runner who beat Tuohy's old record. "From nowhere" is all the "evidence" he needs.
Congrats to Allie but I feel sorry for her because she only held it for about 15 minutes or so.
Little late to this, but wanted to echo the praise for Zealand -- what huge improvements she's made this year, and what a humble, mature young woman. In 2-3 years, I think Liberty could have a really competitive women's XC/distance program if it can build and attract others around her success. I could name a number of top HS underclass girls (maybe boys too) for whom I think the faith aspect of the school would be, if anything, a big plus.
Also, not to make too much of this, but unlike a lot of top HS seniors, she's only 17 -- actually slightly younger than Engelhardt, for example.
