I'm a HS sophomore with PRs of 2:03 (800), 4:07 (1500), 8:58 (3k), and 16:22 (5k XC). For both of my years at my HS, I have been coached by a relatively bad coach. He was bad because he was clueless on how to develop a training plan and did not understand basic training principles. For example, during XC season he had us running almost exclusively 5k race pace workouts with almost no tempo or threshold work. In addition, during track season he wanted us to run our hardest workout (by a very large margin) only 5 days before our district meet which was we were planning to taper for (I was not good enough to make state in my super competitive district). His only saving grace, is that during last track season, I talked to him about my concerns and he decided that he would basically let me write all the workouts (they were not amazing but they were way better than his own).
Over the off-season (summer and winter), I trained with a club whose coach just happens to be the coach for a neighboring school in our district. Unlike my regular HS coach, my club coach is an exceptional coach. All the workouts he writes are effective and challenging, he personalizes my training to accommodate my fitness and previous training load, and he even gave me insight into how I could work with my bad regular HS coach. Every time I go into a training block under my club coach's coaching, I come out of the block in the best shape I have ever been in my life and that fitness carries me through the next season. Training under my club coach is the only reason I am where I am today.
Not too long ago, at the end of track season he told us that he was going to step down as the head coach for both XC and the distance group for track. At first I was hopeful, because I heard rumors that one of the assistant coaches for the club I trained with applied for the job. However, my school's athletic director seemed hell-bent on hiring another teacher because they don't care enough about the distance program to spend the extra money to hire someone outside of our school who is actually qualified for the job. I hate to say it, but my previous HS coach was by far the most qualified to coach because he ran in college. Even worse, I heard that the athletic director may have found a teacher who was willing to do the job, and the teacher has absolutely no qualifications to coach, and doesn't even have any experience running (much less competitive running). I hope that the athletic director will do the right thing and hire someone who is qualified (I already sent an email and all the parents for our varsity group reached out as well), but I have to plan for the worst. My thought was that if the unqualified teacher was hired, I would see if I could possibly train with my club coach instead of my team, but I would race for my team. My club coach would definitely be willing to train me, but it would be up to my regular coach if he would let me. Does someone know if an arrangement like that is even allowed? If not, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
