Who ya got and why
not really a fair question. Mantz runs marathons and is used to that distance whereas Nico doesn't so Mantz would probably break away around 9K and win easily.
Nico. Horses for courses, and Mantz is a road and XC guy.
Now allow me to take this opportunity to say I'm tired of you bashing coach Dahl. I don't defend every coaching decision he has ever made, but if you're looking for the reason that your running career failed after the three generous years he gave you in his program, I would start by looking in the mirror.
I'm going with Dean Karnazeses. He will crush them from his treadmill.
Can someone please explain to me why this is in the high school forum? Both of them graduated high school a long time ago

Interesting thread.
You're entitled to your own opinion, but I think you are undermining nicos endurance and the surface. Nico has a surface advantage. As proven, the track is his best surface. It would a close race all the way until the end. If mantz pulled away at all, it would be around 14k. Not 9k. I appreciate your input. Mantz is really a Billy goat. He gets better as the course gets harder. Tracks are all the same difficulty.

Racing that far on a track would be brutal. They could hit the roads, and with the new shoes, they would run faster.
I don’t know why you’d pick that distance. Based on his running 26:52, Young could beat Mantz in the marathon.
Nico couldn't carry Mantz's jockstrap if he wore one.

Really? So far, Mantz has underperformed as a marathoner. Off of 28:04 talent, Bill Rodgers ran 2:09:27 which would be about 2:07:30 with the new shoes. Mantz, at 27:25, has run 2:07:47. As of yet, Mantz is still better on the track.
Why couldn’t a 26:52 guy on the track carry the jock.if a runner that isnt in the top 500 all-time marathon list.

I wonder who has the faster track PBs...
To answer the OP, if we assume that Mantz is in 27:40ish 10k shape (so a bit off of his peak track shape) while in marathon training, I don't think 15k is long enough to turn it into his favor. I think it would be close at 20k, or the half marathon honestly.

No. Young can run 95 % chance under 1 hour for a half when in sub 27 shape. Mantz has a 1:00:high PR. So 15k would be a no brainer. Young ftw.
Mantz wins if there is a pacer but Young wins if not.

Mantz would lose and then write a 1,000 word Strava post complaining about it

If you’re trained to run a 26:52 10k (and lament that you didn’t “go for it” earlier in the race), you’re absolutely well prepared to race 15k. He’s definitely running big boy mileage and doing a bunch of Mike Smith threshold training. How is Mantz gonna break away at 9k?—at the fastest, they’d be going through 10k a minute slower than Young’s 10k PR, which would feel rather comfortable on the track.
I would take Nico to win in a flat half marathon on the roads. Make the 15k a hilly road course in suboptimal weather and Mantz has a chance, but on the track it’s a no brainer for Nico IMO.
Mantz is great domestically and I love how and how often he runs. With that said, he’s not an elite talent whereas Nico clearly is. Agree with JWH he probably beats him at the half right now and if he decides eventually to run the marathon, his pr’s will be better there too.
