I have recently picked up running three months ago after making a pact with some friends to run a marathon after the summer break. For the first two months I trained completely unstructured, I just ran when I felt like it and ended up running 15km a week. But I saw real improvements and developed a liking for running which made me consider following a training schedule to be able to track my improvement better and get the most out of myself. I took the approach of stealing a training plan from the internet and tweaking it to fit my schedule ill go in depth on my current training plan so if you want to know my question skip the brackets.
(I started out with 15km per week and my plan was to increase that mileage by 15% each week for 3 weeks and then decrease by 15% the fourth week again. this week I am at 35km I have two rest days; Monday and Friday on Tuesdays I do the first and last 1,6km at 6:30/km and the rest at 5:30/km this week 6,4km total. On Wednesdays I do an easy run at 6:30/km this week 6,4km (Tuesday and Wednesday are the same length wise) Thursday I do a bit less but at 4-hour marathon pace 5:40/km this week its 4,8km. On Saturday I do a short easy run before my long run the day after at 6:30/km this week its 3,2km and my long run on Sunday is at 6:30/km and this week 14,3km. to be honest I am not very good at keeping to my pace so 6:30 is more like 6:00 and 5:30 is more like 5:00 or 4:30. I don’t know how to add a picture here so I am sorry for the long explanation.)
Today I raced 3km for my high school PE and got 12 minutes on the dot which surprised me because I wasn’t training for speed and only trained properly for a month and a half, anyways a year before I got 19 minutes so I crushed the best improvement but I guess my question is how can I train for the 3k next year (my goal is sub 9 minute) and also train for my marathon? Am I too optimistic? is a sub 9 minute unachievable in a year coming from 12 minutes? How do I change my training schedule to train as hard as possible for the 3k and marathon at the same time? Can I just build up mileage for my base like crazy and start actual speed training a month before my 3k or am I going to have to choose one? I am very lenient in suggestions I am ok with doubling my runs if anyone thinks that is a good idea. Thanks in advance and sorry if there’s spelling and structure mistakes English is not my first language, and I am dyslexic.
TLDR: I want to train for a marathon but also want to improve my 3k as much
as I physically can how do I adapt my training schedule?
